Setting up a web site involves three main things.
- A domain name has to be registered.
- The web pages have to be written.
- The web pages need to be placed on a web server.
A web server is a computer which is permanently connected to the internet so that people can access the web sites on it and this is referred to as “web hosting” or just “hosting”.
With broadband, it is possible for virtually anyone to “host” a web site on a server in their office or home. However, unless you have fairly serious IT department and already have facilities for running multiple servers on your own intranet, web hosting is going to be more cost effective and reliable using a hosting company.
Web hosting companies have hundreds of computers serving thousands of web sites. They maintain the computers, they back up the data, they have emergency power supplies, and they physically guard the facilities. A good hosting company will also be able to offer load balancing which means that if there is a lot of traffic coming to your web server, extra computers join in to handle the traffic, thus keeping the site fast for visitors.
Having used many different hosting companies it is fair to say that there is a huge difference in the quality of the service that is provided. Although most are acceptable in terms of the performance when serving the web pages, the state of their administration interfaces and the management and tech support within the companies can be very different.
