Javascript is a language that runs on web browsers. The code is included as part of a web page or is downloaded to the web browser in a script file. Javascript has nothing to do with the programming language Java and was simply given the name Javascript to cash in on the publicity that Java was getting at the time. Microsoft copied Javascript for Internet Explorer and call it JScript.
Javascript is a surprisingly powerful language both in what it can be made to do and in the technical aspects of the language that computer people get excited about.
Javascript can be used within a web site to make things more interactive for the visitor and for creating extra flourishes. A site should never depend on javascript to function because, even though support is generally good, users are still able to turn Javascript off if they want.
For instance if the entries on a web form need to be checked for valid values, javascript could be used to check them instantly and stop the page being sent to the server. This lets the user know he has made a mistake much more quickly. However in case Javascript was turned off, the form should still be checked by the server and any errors reported back to the user.
Javascript can be used for tasks ranging from mundane to exciting. It can ensure that the first field of a form is focused when the page is loaded or add small amounts of animation. Using Javascript to make a web site feel more like a desktop application is a major component of the Web 2.0 concept.
We work with several popular open source Javascript libraries and are able to write our own sophisticated Javascript code as can be seen in our web application lightboxr.com.
