PHP is a programming language that runs on a web server and allows the content of pages to be customised at the instant they are being sent to a web browser. A page showing results of a search is a perfect example of a page that has been dynamically generated by a script rather than a static page that has been written before hand.
PHP has become very popular over recent years because it is open source, efficient, very full featured and the language is reasonably easy to read and understand. When PHP is used on a web site it acts as a CGI (Common Gateway Interface) which simply means it works with the web server to generate pages.
PHP runs entirely on the server and generates XHTML, and it never runs on the client web browser so there are no browser compatability issues and nothing has to be downloaded by people to view a site.
PHP is our language of choice for server side page content processing. A small amount of server side coding can really make web sites much more interesting for the visitor and can also make them much easier to update and maintain, because the computer is doing more of the mundane work to integrate changes.
We can discuss ways that adding a little server side scripting can make your site stand out from the crowd.
