What is involved in getting a site?

Building a web site usually begins with talking. Whoever builds your site needs to know what you want and the end result will be a unique product. Therefore it is important that you choose a web developer who you are comfortable working with and who is able to understand what you want and then deliver it.

Any developer would have an initial meeting to get a feeling for the requirements which would cover much of the same territory as the pages in this guide. From this, a proposal would be sent outlining pricing structure and an indication of the developers understanding of your requirements.

Sites vary from very small to very large so it is impossible to say exactly what might be proposed. For small sites the proposal may be sufficient to use as a specification or for bigger sites, producing a specification may be the first billable step of the process. The specification is used to ensure that all parties agree what is to be built and so that it can be signed off once it has been delivered.

To actually produce a site you will normally provide us with most of the text content. This may come from existing brochures or proposals you have produced or you may even write it specifically for the site. We take the content and edit or adapt it so that it works well when viewed on a site. Inevitably we will have to write some of the text, but the more we have to write the more the site will cost.

Next, we will produce a layout design which will look like a finished site but will simply be one or two pages so that we can change or refine the design before investing time in producing lots of pages.

Once you have approved the design we will then finish building the site, and will deploy it and set up any ancillary services as will have been agreed in the specification.
