Traffic

Traffic refers to the number of visitors you get at a web site and the number of pages they view when they are visiting a site. There is no point in having a site if you are not generating traffic. But is not always obvious how to generate it.

Most people will assume that traffic must come from people finding the site via Google or similar search engine. And that is certainly a possibility. But in many cases you generate your own traffic by publicising your site. How this is done and how effective it is depends on the type of business or organisation but self promotion will always be a big factor in generating traffic.

There may also be several on line directories that you can list your organisation on. Not only can this generate direct traffic from those directories, but it can also help search engines find your site and point visitors to your site when the do searches.

And just as it is easier to sell more to an existing customer than to find a new customer, it is easier to get a past visitor to return to your site than to attract a new visitor. This is why keeping your site up to date and making the content as dynamic as possible is so important. If you have a blog and your visitors enjoy reading it they will come back to see the latest entries. You can also help them to spread the word by providing an “email this page to a friend” link.

Dynamic content also makes your site more interesting to search engines which identify sites with frequent content changes and give them higher rankings.
